EBA Publishes New Paper on PEP Identification & KYC for May 2024

Euro Banking Association publishes paper on identification of Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs)

The Euro Banking Association (EBA) has recently released a paper addressing the identification and handling of Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs), as well as their family members and close associates, in the corporate-to-bank domain across Europe. The publication, titled "EBA CBCS - Identification of Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) in the corporate-to-bank KYC process," aims to provide recommendations for improving Know Your Customer (KYC) practices in this area.

The paper examines the current procedures and due diligence processes related to PEPs and their associates, including the evaluation of Functional PEP Lists and the status of senior managers in State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). It also offers recommendations to support the implementation of automated KYC processes and enhance the ability to consistently monitor corporate customer data across Europe.

The Secretary General of the EBA, Thomas Egner, highlights the challenges faced by financial institutions operating across borders due to the fragmented and inconsistent regulatory landscape related to PEPs in Europe. The EBA's work in this area aims to address these challenges by examining existing practices and proposing practical solutions to enhance KYC processes while promoting harmonization.

The publication focuses on various key areas, including reviewing current methods and standards for identifying PEPs and their associates, assessing the identification of senior managers in State-Owned Enterprises. It also explores the use of Functional PEP Lists and their potential benefits and challenges, and providing recommendations to support the implementation of automated KYC processes.
